"Hey all, new to this board, so bare with me!
Just bought a 2.3hp Evinrude OB, looks to be in reasonable nick, just a bit battle scarred. Can anyone give me a year of manufacture please? Model no. is HE2RESS, made in Hong Kong by the Outboard Motor Company (OMC) My guess is about 1990 after doing a bit of research on the WWW.
Also, is there anyway of increasing the HP on this engine? I have heard of restrictors in the carb or the inlet manifold gasket, but not sure where to look (or what I'm looking for!)
Can anyone suggest a good source of evinrude/Johnson parts in England, hopefully near to Surrey? i know most posters here are in the US, but there must be some UK members here?
Thanks."

1990 is correct. how much horsepower are you trying to get? are you going racing?

"Only looking to gain an extra

"Only looking to gain an extra HP or so. The 3.3 HP and 4hp engines look identical to the 2.3HP and I can't belive that OMC make different size engines (pistons, blocks, etc) to gain the same HP rating. I have heard for instance that a Tohatsu 10 Hp can be uprated to a 15 simply by renewing the inlet manifold gasket. I wondered if the OMC branded engines were just as easy to modify?
BTW, racing? with a 2.3 HP? against what? the local kids model boats in the boating lake!! No, its just that the extra HP would be useful when running against tide and wind."

"was just kidding about the ra

"was just kidding about the racing. besides, the model boats would probably win. there are often many subtle differences between models using the same block. carbs, exhaust, port changes, etc. you could research it on the BRP website if you have time to do comparisons. or maybe someone with time on their hands will check, and post.
anyway, have fun, and good luck. S."

"Gents, have taken carb off mo

"Gents, have taken carb off mounting and found what looks like a restrictor plate, fitted between the carb to inlet port connector. Seems to be appx 20mm in diameter, round in shape, with a rectangular cutout in the centre, which blocks appx 50% of the venturi. It can be (and has been!!) removed, but I can't tell if the HP of the motor has increased? Have I done the right thing in removing it to gain a bit of extra HP or will removing it cause any problems? Would Ibe right in guessing a possible 1 HP extra? Looking at the parts list on the BRP website, ther seems to be no mention of the 2.3 HP model, but does show a 3.3HP one, with what looks like the same carb. Also shows an item (no 38 on the drawing) which is what I have removed, but doesn't list it in the written part description? Perhaps OMC don't want to let people know how easy it is to up the HP rating of their motor.
Comments greatfully received."
