Evinrude 1994 140hp

Ok battery is charging now. As you've probably figured out i have no clue as to what im doing. When I put this motor on it's current boat all the wires from the ignition had been cut. I just spliced like wires back together for the most part and it started right up. I had 2 purple and 1 gray wire coming from the motor. And 1 purple wire (split into 3 purple wires) and 1 black wire coming from the ignition that i wasnt sure where they went so i left them since the motor was running. Today in another atempt to get my tach working I connected 1 purple wire from ignition and 1 purple from the motor to the ignition side of the tach (plus the Grey to send and the black to ground) and now my tach finally works and my battery is charging. Is this coincidence or am I charging the battery through the tach. Also i still have 1 purple wire coming from the motor and one front the ignition. Should I spliced those together?
