pulling chunks of rubber out o

pulling chunks of rubber out of the serious of 6 holes just above the cav. plate

a lot of black oily exhaust type leakage from that hole as well from the water exhaust port

I expect the water pump etc. is gone

any tricks for dropping the lower unit ? I can see 2 bolts that hold on the shift lever to it

how do I disconnect the shift rod that goes to the lower unit

any advise would be helpful

it might be an old motor but it starts well enough

thanks

"The black oily exhaust leakag

"The black oily exhaust leakage is most likely just unburned carbon/oil from the exhaust. This is normal for most 2 stroke motors. The chunks of rubber out of the holes above the cavitation plate are not likely to be impeller material since it is unlikely that they would make it all the way up your copper water tube, through the engine, through your thermostat and back down to the water exit holes that you describe. It is possible, but unlikely in my opinion. My guess (and I am not completely familiar with your model)is that they are upper seals or motor mount material. If the motor is cooling properly and you can see a good stream out the tell-tale then I would suspect that I may be correct.

Of course it never hurts to check your impeller. As for dropping the lower unit. If you decide to do this you would just unscrew one of those bolts to disconnect the shift rod and the lower unit should drop down."

Agree about the black oily lea

Agree about the black oily leakage.

Also agree that the rubber is not likely to be pump impeller certainly not if it is still pumping OK

Possibles maybe the seal between the inner and outer exhaust housings or the seal between the steering bracket and the exhaust housing.

"Thanks for your help

I forgot to mention there isn't water coming out of the water exhaust tell-tale as well there is a lack of power in the top end

I'm assuming it is over heating

Additionally the motor is only used 5-10 minutes at a time

what is the degree of difficulty in replacing said motor mounts and if there has been damaged occurred is it worth fixing ?

as I said before it starts well has never let me down in the past, I've done the carbs, I've done the head gasget, I've done the whole fule system, replaced coils

is it really worth putting more money into it ? or should I get a mechanic to look into it ?"

"Well if water is not coming o

"Well if water is not coming out of the tell tale, I would definitely take a closer look at the impeller. If it is all ripped up, I would replace it and keep an eye on the water exit cavity to see if you stop seeing rubber bits (although there still could be some from the older impeller, if that was it). If it is all ripped up give a good look at the impeller plate and housing for scratches and what not and replace if necessary.

I have never changed the seals or motor mounts I have mentioned above and really couldn't tell you the problems that would exist if you have a problem with them. I just know they are made out of black rubber material and are located just above the exhaust/water exit cavity.

Good luck."

"I was working on dropping the

"I was working on dropping the lower unit to check on the water pump when I noticed on the throttle handle side there seems to be a hole above the gear hub, at the front of the motor.

Seems to be leaking gear oil, is this a frost plug?"

"I suspect that you are probab

"I suspect that you are probably just looking at a drain hole that is put there to ensure that all the water in the water pump and surrounding area drains out when removed from the water (wouldn't want it to freeze in the winter). A lot of crud gets in there and if you are removing the lower unit, I would suggest cleaning it out to ensure that it will always provide proper draining.

I doubt it is gear oil coming from there (but it could be). More likely it is just unburned carbon from your exhaust leaking out, which is normal. To be sure, check your gear oil and if it is not milky or water droplets don't drip out of your gear oil drain hole, then your fine."
