model 85393M 1973 85 hp.... OK here this goes again... what are the orifice plugs in the "bowl" for, and are they needed? all 4 of mine are missing.. Could this be the issue with my bogging down at WOT?

Re: evinrude 85 hp carb question

I am not sure what your calling the orifice plugs. But if it idles and runs good untill you get to WFO you are probably running out of fuel( or your diaphram pump will not deep up with demand). Or could be trash in a main jet. One thing for sure DON'T run it WFO until you figure it out, you might blow it up.

Re: evinrude 85 hp carb question

The Orifice plug is what it is called in the parts screen for the carb on evinrude.com.... Main jet is good and clean, great spark all 4 cyl (jumps a 1/2" gap on all 4) and good compression... Is it possible to get too much fuel at WOT??

Re: evinrude 85 hp carb question

Sorry I just don't know about the orifice plug . But if it is a plug and is supposed to plug a hole you might be getting too much fuel through that hole at WFO. One thing I use to determine if it is a rich or lean issue, run it with the cowl off and the carbs exposed and use a squirt can with mixed fuel. when it starts acting up squirt fuel mix into the carbs. If it revs up it is a lean problem if it dies out it was a rich problem. somtimes you can do it on the trailor at the ramp. If it is a higher speed problem you need someone else to drive.

33 0317646 ORIFICE PLUG (54C). WHEN REPLACING ORIFICE PLUGS; ALL PLUGS must be changed to orifice plug (#54c

I believe these are your high speed jets, are they not? They are deep and hard to see.
