Hi Guys,
i have slackened the 6 bolts off on the leg, and managed to wiggle it around, i find that i do not have enough space to free the screw which is attached to the gear change linkage .
i can see it and probably slacken it off if i engage forward gear, but i understand it must be kept in neutral, is this correct ?
Any tips would be greatly welcome, this is the first attempt at doing this and i want to do it right
Thanks in advance.

It would have helped if you included the year, however I assume you have the two bolt brass type shift linkage connector.

Turn the prop so that the lower unit's shift rod may raise to engage the gear... move the engine's shft lever so that it lowers the upper shift rod. THere'ya go!

Thanks Raceone,
Seems here in the UK, the info is not that good
you guys over there always come good
many thanks for that

hi guys,
managed to undo and remove the screw after i put in gear , i could reach it.
was then reluctant to pull out bottom leg, very stiff, i did then manage to get it moving with a rubber mallet, it then came out, leaving the spindle in position, please look at photo, i think this has probably happened before, marks on spindle as though somebody had tried to turn it with grips, i just don't know, have dressed them up, now just need your advice as what to do next please. outboard 2.jpg

The driveshaft is supposed to come out attached to the lower unit !!-----So the shaft is seized in the crankshaft.--------Needs to be pulled out before you can continue with proper repairs.

hi,
thanks for reply
i have turned motor upside down and soaked with penetrating oil and will leave for a while.
had no problem getting 6 bolts from lower unit out, they had been greased.
motor has been standing for 2 years, i guess water has corroded ?

hi bill
yes i bought it from a guy who used it for diving in devon, salt water !!
not sure how i am going to get the drive shaft out yet, have not checked the gear oil yet, trouble is parts here are so expensive, no one really wants to help, i think if its bad it would be a financial loss
may i ask any ideas on removing driveshaft ?
i have it in the garage upside down have soaked with penetrating oil, which i did notice has run out over the floor, does this tell you anything ?

Different ways to pull the shaft out.------Clamp the shaft in a vice and use block of wood across exhaust housing and a hefty hammer.------Or make up an adapter to clamp on the shaft for a slide hammer.

Hi Guys
I am new to outboards so please bear with me.
What i do not understand is, the shaft did come down about 4inches in total, is it clear from the crankshaft and binding somewhere else ?
on inspection of the water pump, the housing and impeller look good, but i have not found the roll pin ?

There really is no other place for it to bind in the exhaust housing.---So grab hold of it and give it a firm tug.---If everything is original as manufactured the only place it can hang up is in the crankshaft spline of the powerhead.

If that driveshaft moved 4" down out of the powerhead, there's nothing left to hold it... should fall out!

Hi Joe,
no its me being optimistic !!!!
the lower unit came off the driveshaft, it's stuck !!!!
trying to think of the best way to remove, soaking it in release oil, I wonder about removing exhaust housing or should I go for remove power head option
its a nice engine I want to get it operational again

will give this a go
thanks for your kind help its very much appreciated.
you mean put the 2x4 on the bottom of the driveshaft and pound it from there ?

Have done as you said, also given a good soak of penetrating oil, its running out the bottom of the motor
will leave for a day and then try again
