Evinrude 115 disaster need answers

I just got a 1993 flats boat w

I just got a 1993 flats boat with a 115 evinrude 2 weeks ago. First time in the water there was no power so i bought the carb kits and did those myself. So the next weekend i take it out and the boat is running great. about 3 hours later i hear a thud and the engine stalls. I hear a knocking sound and know its bad news. The motor still starts and runs on a plane back the ramp. I get home take off the cylinder heads and find i have got a piston that is melted. What would be the cause for this tragedy? I used penzoil marine oil and i removed the vro and mixed it 50;1. Im at a big loss. $5000 gone in a short 3 hour ride. What is the number one cause for this kind of a failure?

Agreeing with Beckerjs above about one (1) clogged carburetor High Speed jet which would result in a lean mixture to one cylinder, I would add the following.

Timing set too far advanced = Usually results in pre-ignition which in turn causes a piston to melt.

Small flaw in head gasket = Allows a very small spray of water enter cylinder resulting in super hot combustion = melted piston.

Wrong spark plugs with too hot a heat range = melted piston.

Metal particles in cylinder head, being reused from a previous engine failure = metal particle woul;d glow similar to a model airplane engine glow plug = pre ignition = melted piston.

NOTE: Damaged cylinder heads as above should always be replaced. Do not attempt to clean/remove those steel particles as the resulting failure will be most expensive.

Best not to look for the number one failure but rather all of them."

"Looking for good news /bad news regarding 2000 225hp ficht engines on a boat I'm looking at buying. Has been in fresh water since new, and I will be keeping it in the ocean. Any questions I should be asking the previous owner? Any reports would be helpfull. Thanks MIKE"

Thanks guys for the help. I took the powerhead off and found only 1 cylinder was damaged. I took it to a evinrude dealer its getting rebuilt. 1600 dollars to do a rebuild. Includes boring new piston and old pistons with new rings. carbuerator and new water pump and thermostats. . Thanks for the help
