Evinrude 100 XP

What is the difference in the 1989 XP 100 & a regular 100. Is the XP faster or is it just outfitted with more options & how reliable is this engine? Any known problems with it?

Had one guy tell me that it was a great engine that probably kicked out a little more than 100 hp & had another that had a frown on his face & said it was OK if it didn't have a bunch of hours on it & wouldn't elaborate any further. So looking for an opinion from someone here as most of the time everyone here is correct in their assesment of things. Thanks!

The 100 XP was a marketing feature , very popular gimmic in North America to gain market share.-------------------It is essentially the same as the 115 HP motor , but with different decals.-------------Makes people brag about their fast / powerful 100 HP motor.--------It is the proven crossflow design.-----------------One drawback is the " pressureback piston rings "-----------many of these suffered from broken rings.-----------So if you are looking to buy one make sure you evaluate the condition with a compression test.-----------------I rebuild these crossflow motors all the time.---------About $700.00 for parts.----Great running / simple / reliable engines.
