If you had removed the philip screw that exists in the lower unit skeg, that releases the inner shift lever. You would need to correct that problem if it exists.

Otherwise, check the shift connection that exists in back of the small plate halfway down the long exhaust housing. The shift rods need to have the groove in the rods centered with the bolt holes in the brass connector.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

One other note - there is a sl

One other note - there is a sliding cam slot adjustment just in and under the shift lever on the right side of the motor. Visible but you have to look for it. Its job is to adjust the linkage so it goes in to Fwd and REV selection equally by a slot screw adjustment. It may have gotten out of adjustment.. Just something else to check.

"Tim here. Could also be the sliding shifter dog in lower unit and/or reverse gear engaging ears. They tend to get rounded off with age and/or linkage slop which allows little or no outside pressure to hold in gear. the shift dog itself is supported in gear position by a detent ball, which in itself is acceptable to hold motor in gear when parts are in good condition. However as the shifting parts wear out from normally lack of maintenance, the positive entry into gear is compromised and rounding of shift dog ears and gear tabs results. I have a tool to redress gear tabs for a one time fix but the shift dog sleeve needs to be replaced with a new one. I have seen some primitive repairs done in this lower unit type........so you won't know until you open it up. Usually the seals are going bad anyway. Water pump impeller should be replaced too. However, to examine the gearcase itself is very simple and involves no parts, other than a premium silicone to reseal the spaghetti seal and skeg attaching screws. Take the fishing line off the prop shaft and examine the seal there. Put a bronze shear pin in and not a steel one. Good Luck. Tim"
