"This is really a two parter:
1) Do Evinrude's Etec outboards go down any lower than the 40hp? It seems that's what the Evinrude web site showed; the 40 and 60 and larger; but not the smaller engines (like a 15hp or a 25hp for example).
2) I read some about the Etecs being really great a few years ago. Is that just because of meeting the 2006 air regs. while staying with a 2 stroke design and thereby having good power, or are they also comparably fuel efficient to say a comparably powered Yamaha or Honda 4 stroke? Thanks in advance for replies!

"I think Evinrude just announced a couple new models going down to 25hp.

The E-tec compares favorably to a 4 stroke in most catagories. They are far lighter and more powerful because of the two stroke design. The fuel efficiency and sound levels are comparable to a 4 stroke. Without the complexity of a valvetrain or belts, there are fewer parts to fail. The e-tecs have been pretty reliable for the first couple years of production. Time will tell as far as the long term reliability."
