It’s not a sophisticated motor/gearbox
any 75W 90 weight gear oil extreme pressure will work. So-called marine gear oilS have some additives that will handle a bit of water.
Yes, pump it in the bottom when it comes out the top it’s full. Put the top vent screw in first. That will create an airlock and very little will come out when you pull the pump out of the bottom hole to reinstall the plug.
I have one my dad bought brand new and about 1970 and we’ve used nothing but regular automotive gear oil with no issues.
