Eska 7.5 wont shift into gear

Quick question, I have an eska 7.5 1970s model and I got it running but the shifter does nothing. Was wondering is there a secret to removing the engine from the lower unit shaft. Got all screws off but only comes up about a few millimeters and binds up on something. Do I need to disassemble the entire engine? Any help would be appreciated.

So was finally able to remove the power head and see that the shaft was not in the clutch assembly so it got a bit chewed up. Took the dremel and cleaned up the spindle end and dry fitted it into the clutch assembly. Fit like a glove now, prop spins and was able to reassemble everything again but now shifter spins freely and can't figure out why. Will test run tomorrow ran out of daylight.
