Engines die out at idle

"I have a pair of Chrysler M36

"I have a pair of Chrysler M360 engines which have been rebuilt and were running great last summer. This year I noticed that the starbord engine after it is warmed up and idling under load wants to die out. The engine will restart and you can put it in gear but after a while the engine wants to quit. I have checked my carb, I cannot find any vacum leak, no water in fuel tanks, new coils on both engines last year. I am begining to suspect electrical. Can anyone tell me what the volts should be off the ECU in the electronic iginition system or could a bad altinator or battery be causing my problem, by not giving enough volts to run the system. I am willing to listen to any thoughts.

Thanks"

"could be a ballast resistor t

"could be a ballast resistor too. ask me how i know!!!

Dist. cap and rotors? are they in need of replacement?

alt. should be putting out ~14.5 volts."

"I had a similar problem on my

"I had a similar problem on my 360's. I replaced the ballast resistors, coils, rotor and cap and it resolved the issue. i had also checked the voltage from the alt.

their is an internal "brain" in the dist. of the chryslers. not sure if your problem is a symptom of that going bad, but, when i bought my boat i had a simiar problem with the engine cutting out under load. i had the dist. rebuilt and the problem was fixed."

"you can check the voltage on

"you can check the voltage on the batteries and it should be ~12v before starting. after starting it should be higher to reflect the alt. charging the battery.

i've been told you can loosen the battery cable and start the motor. once started take the cable off and if the engine dies, the alt. is bad. you can also just check the voltage off the alt. when running if you have a volt meter.

hope this helps."

"I had the same problem last y

"I had the same problem last year. The last thing that I replaced (of course) was the electronic control module and that was it. It looked fine, but when I unbolted it from the bracket the back was all melted out. If you have twins, switch them and see what happens."

"Thanks for the information, I

"Thanks for the information, I will try a couple of the solutions and check for some of the problems this weekend. I'll let you know what I find."

"A new ECM from NAPA is aout 3

"A new ECM from NAPA is aout 30 bucks. Even if that's not it, it's good to have a spare on board. Either 4 or 5 pin will work.

"Well here is what I found, Al

"Well here is what I found, Alternator is working correctly, batteries are good and giving me the volts needed. Started to check the distributor, and found the reluctor wheel had almost no gap between the wheel and the pick up. Adjusted the gap with non-metalic gauage. No problems since ran engines all weekend with no problems. P}urred like a kitten. Good idea FastJeff, I am going to pick a new ECM up this week and put it on the boat as a spare. Thanks everyone.
