"Hi Guys! I'm new to this

"Hi Guys! I'm new to this discussion board and apologize if i've not posted in the right section. I haven't yet figured out how it's structured. Here's my question. My friend is selling a 5 HP 2003 Mercury that is still in the box. Could you please confirm th year, tell me if it was a good engine, and what you would estimate the value to be? Here are the numbers: ME 5M Model # 1-005201AK Serial # OT259739. Reading your forum, I didn't think Merc even used serial numbers. I'm a bit confused. Also, could you tell me who actually made the engine? I cannot thank you guys enough for the service you provide for so many people. You've already saved me humdreds of dollars in dumb mistakes by reading your forum religously. THANK YOU!!"

"David, you are correct - merc

"David, you are correct - merc doesn't have serials, they have production numbers that really contain no information.

The model 5M tells me it's a 4 stroke and serial does indicate it was built in the early 2000's (2002/03).

The motor itself was built by Tohatsu, so it's nearly identical to a 5 horse Tohatsu or Nissan (all come from the same factory).

Personally, I would stay away from this motor even though it's brand new.

It's big problem is it's a single cylinder model which is bad enough, add in the 4 stroke and you have a motor that is going to shake like a wet dog on a cold day no matter how well you keep it tuned.

You only get spark every second stroke (because every other one is needed for exhaust).

So that poor little motor has to rely on a single piston to get the crank around 720 degrees before it gets it's next power stroke.

I really would not buy a motor that was less than a twin cylinder even at this horsepower - and they are available - I have a 2.5 horse Twin that just purrs along nicely.

A brand new 2009 model 5 horse can be picked up for about 1000 bucks which would include the 3 year warranty - so you can figure a value from that point. An 8 horse twin sells for about 1500 or so.

It's light enough at about 55 pounds (a twin 2 stroke 6/8/9.9 horse weighs about 75 and a twin 8 horse 4 stroke is just a little over 80 pounds).

But, in "my opinion" you would really be unhappy with the way it runs after the first season of use is under it's belt...."
