"Ok - I recently posted a mess

"Ok - I recently posted a message saying I wasn't getting spark. I have found that I'm getting spark now. I replaced the resistor, coil, points, cap, and condensor. But it still will not start. I have noticed that the flame arrestor has been getting soaked in gas after I crank it over. I pulled the flame arrestor off and found that during cranking, I have some gas shooting out of a port directly behind the small butterfly flaps (Center of the two). It has a rochestor quadrajet 4 bbl. I should state that I burned the started up during my tries at fixing. I have replaced the starter. But I'm not sure if I have the correct rotation starter now. Actually, Im not sure what starter I need and the old one is gone.

How can I tell which rotation starter I need?
How can I tell what rotation engines I should have? Especially if I have the wrong starter now.
Would the opposite rotation starter cause the gas to shoot up out of the carb when cranking over?

Engines are both mounted with the flywheel to the back of the boat. The port engine flywheel rotates towards the port (And runs great). The starboard engine flywheel rotates towards the starboard (With new starter). I have Velvet drives 2.91:1 ratios.

Additional help would be appreciated!!"

Brian on my 454's there is

Brian on my 454's there is an engine identification plate right by the bell housing that states the rotation of that engine. I believe it says LH and RH.

this plate just states both rh

this plate just states both rh and lh. I think this is for timing purposes. You use one side or the other based on the rotation of the engine you are timing. Is this correct?

Correct but I believe the rota

Correct but I believe the rotation was identified on the model number line. My engine is a 1979 so it may differ.

"Here is the answer to my prob

"Here is the answer to my problem (Or at least some of it at this point).

I did find the rotation of the engine on the engine plate. I had to clean it up better and found it stamped on the plate. So West Marine did sell be the incorrect starter. This was turing the flywheel the wrong way. In turn, this was blowing the fuel out of the carb instead of sucking the air through the intake.

Once I got the starter corrected, the engine starter first turn. As for the orginal problem, I'm not 100% sure yet. I changed all other components out trying to get it running. I suspect it was the resistor at this point. I did put the old resistor back on and the engine stopped (But this may have been becasue I didn't have the dwell adjusted correctly at the time). I will be putting some of the old components back on to determine actual probem and repost as I find out more."

Cripes! THe oil pump and raw

Cripes! THe oil pump and raw water pump were turning the wrong way too. I hope you didn't wreck anything.

You'll have to put new plugs in to get her going.
