Engine will not go into forward gear.

Yesterday my boat was working fine until we stopped the engine for 1/2hour. The engine would start up and run in neutral until I tried to engage the forward gear it would stall out. It would engage into reverse but not forward. Had to get towed back to marina. Any ideas on what happened?

Sounds like your shift interrupter switch is to blame. This switch kills the motor for a split second when you shift in or out of F and R. The shift cable from this location to the outdrive, and the arm it moves, must also be free to move or this nonsense happens.

To repair it, the OD has to come off the boat and the cable lubed or replaced, along with freeing up the arm it moves. On my boat, this arm was the problem. Freeing it up fixed the problem.

Correction.

The shift interrupter switch is only activated when shifting OUT OF GEAR under normal circumstances.

If it activates when shifting into gear it is typically a cable adjustment or a bad cable. Bad cable is too much resistance based on wear in the cable itself or in many cases due to over heating as the cable is typically routed against the exhaust down tube.

The shift interrupter switch is activated when resistance is created in the short shift cable causing the V notch on the shift bracket to move thus actuating the switch.

so the cable needs to be looked at to see what may be wrong. Too much resistance or was something done to the boat that you are not mentioning?????
