"Just wondering, I have come across a V/P 431 V6 engine about to be removed for a diesel, I currently have a AQ151 on a 280 leg in a 17.5" sports boat, my question is would this engine fit or be compatable with the boat and or leg, would it be as simple as a straight exchange, or is it a bit more complex, what is required to fit this engine to my 280 leg, is this a worth while upgrade, there would be little expence as I could get same money for my engine as 431 cost, just dont know what is compatable.
Regards
Nick."

"Nick, it is not a straight exchange and you will likely run into difficulties. The 4 cylinders VP require a gear ratio in the outdrive lower unit of 2.15:1, and the 6 cylinders 1.89:1. Also, if you decide to go ahead, you will have to install a Y-pipe and possibly replace the transom shield if the Y-pipe comes with double-bypass holes. Just the Y-pipe costs over $800 and the gear sets are not cheap, either:

This topic, as well as repowering from 4 cylinders to V-8, have been discussed before:

"Thanks El Pescador, I think I'll shelve this idea, and stick with my trusty 151.
