"Should get the Merc Shop Manual from a dealer. It is vital if you are going to do work on it yourself.

Setting timing is a matter of connecting the light to the battery and taking the inductive lead and clamping it around cylinder one. The loosening the distributor and slightly rotating it until your timing is set. Usually 8-10 degrees BEFORE top dead center. While at it, rev the engine and make sure the timing advances to 25-30 degrees before top dead center at 2500rpms.

Again, these are ballpark instructions and your engine may be different.
