Engine starting problems

I have a 5.7*Mercruiser V8 (petrol) on a 1999 Bayliner 2855. The engine has been rebuilt by previous owner last September and I replaced both batteries in April. Last Sunday* (hot day)*took the boat out and had no trouble starting whatsoever. After being*on the river*for half an hour or so,*I*stopped in a lock and turned the engine off for 2-3 mnutes. When I tried to start up again, nothing. No cranking,*just a click and everything dead. Pulled the boat out of the lock with the ropes and tied up and waited. About an hour*later it started up again. Took it back*to the marina*and shut it down for a couple of hours. Started again OK, went for a cruise and stopped on the river bank for an hour. Started with some difficulty and*came back. Next day I tried to start it later in the day,*in the cool temperature of the evening. Started first time, let it run for a few minutes and turned it off, just to make sure. Tried to start it again, and no luck. Nothing turning. Again only a click but no cranking.

Can anybody have a guess on what the problem might be? is it the starter, the coil, loose wires, bad relays, any ideas?

Bad batter connection or cable end

Remove the cables from the battery and clean the lugs with a steel brush. The ends of the cable also. They may look clean but aren't maybe ?

Then with the battery still disconnected follow the pos cable to the next connection and remove and clean as you go.

When you get to the starter do one wire at a time and then re-inbstall so not to mix up the wires.

Follow the neg wire to the main ground on the bell housing and remove and clean that one.

See the slav solenoid remove it from the plate and clean the plate where it mounts and the base of the solenoid it acts as a ground.

The connections on the slave cleaned ?

Now try it.

Say your boat still does it then look to your neutral safety switch next it may have a bad contact.

All of the above assumes that you have a good battery, and alt.

Chief

wrong again.... All current slave solenoids use a ground wire to the solenoid coil.

Only ford style solenoids were base grounded

watch your info more closely........

Chief,

ford style solenoids were used with the imfamous 170's 470's with the starter motor with no solenoid on the starter motor and maybe some of the older ford blocks.

ALL 140's, V6, V8 used the same style as I described. It is the same type used on the trim pump for up and down..........

DUDE,

DONT TRY TO OUT SMART ME!! I am not perfect nor do I know it all (as you seem to think you do) BUT I HAVE BEEN DOING IT A LOT LONGER THAN YOU, AS A LIVING AND NOT FROM MY BACK YARD OR ARM CHAIR OR BAR STOOL!!!!!

The picture shows a solenoid with TWO SMALL coil connections. These connections are as follows.

One is for yellow with red stripe wire (crank position on key switch) and the other is black!

Do you know what black represents???? GROUND

THE SHAPE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. The case is only that a case.....

Dont F"CK with those who know, YOU WILL LOOSE!

I understand you like to participate but you do it to much and too often. Personally I am sick and tired of reading and rereading your posts, some make NO SENSE or are off topic completely or are dangerous!

You need to read more, think more, do more research before answering and answer LESS!

JMHO!
