Engine start concerns

Been almost a year since I last started my GM inline six. Hope to try to start it next month. Any suggestions on lubrication issues? Should I remove plugs and spray a little oil in the cylinders? Also could someone tell me the purpose of the porcelain resistor block wired at the distributor. While checking my electrical starting system I noticed it was warm after checking the spark to my points this after turning the engine over just to check to make sure starter and solenoid worked properly. Next step is to put the fuel in and fire her up. Thanks for all your info out there.

it cuts the juice to the dist. you termed iot correctly it's a resistor.

Remove the coil wire and crank the motor for 5 senonds, stop let sit a minute crank again 3-4 times to bring oil up.

Hook back up the coil dribble some fuel into the carb, make sure the drive is fully down and put water to the drive and start her up. Place the throttle in neutral and forward one third.

Say she don't start don't crank more then 5 seconds. Let sit and dribble a little more fuel after 2 or 3 tries. Then try agian if you have good spark and fuel going to the carb she should start.

Let warm and then cut back the throttle.

She should charge say 14 v. Choke should open after a minute or 2.

Idle should be 600-650 in the water on a warm motor, in gear. On a trailer warm motor 750 it will lose rpm in the water.
