"I am a new boater and just bought a 2001 boat with a 4.3, 6 cylinder mercruiser. The boat was not used much by the revious owner so I had engine checked and a yearly service completed. It runs well, but when I turn the key off, it sputters and tries to continue to run for 15-30 seconds. I usually put it in neutral when I turn it off. Is this a timing issue?? Gas issue?? Any help would be appreciated."

"Lower idle setting,better grade of fuel and letting it idle to cool down before turning it off may help.
If not you can have an idle control solenoid installed.
There seems to be a fair number of this model having this problem."

"Neal, My 4.3LX does the same thing. The easiest cure is to let the motor idle for 30 seconds after a hard run. It should then shut down gracefully. if that doesn't work, put it into forward, and then turn it off."
