Yesterday out on the water, my engine had a sound that sounded like a bad belt but was not a high screeching sound. I guess it sounded like a loud humm. I begin to head towards the launch at idle speed as I as got near, the engine made a loud thump that sounded like I had hit bottom or a log. It killed the engine, so I raised the lower unit and checked it. the lower unit looked fine and it spun with no sounds or grinding gear noise. I assumed it was ok, but decided to get a pull into the launch. Does anyone out there have an idea of what it could be. gimbal bearing, broken rod, etc. I know it prob could be many things, just looking for a place to start. The engine is a 1989 mercruiser 350 with 740 hours.
