" I have a Supra with a Pleasurecraft 454 engine.
I asked my brother to winterize/ drain the engine before last winter. He apparently missed the plug on the left side of the block and I found a soft plug laying in the bilge. I put it back in, and then fired it up in the yard and it ran nice and cool and eveything seemed fine.
The first time I launched the boat, I mistakenly let my son drive and after aproximately 10 minutes of basic ideling (no wake zone on the way out to the river) I found out the engine was overheating (he wasn't watching the gauges). While we were still in the boat, I pulled the T-Stat and the block was dry. Apparently the pick up pump was not working and the engine was not getting any water. The engine wasn't missing or running rough when I shut it down or when I started it back up (after removed the T-stat).
Later after we got it home, I checked and the oil is milky. I know this means water got into the oil and that it is hopefully just a head gasket, but could be a warped or cracked head, and/ or cracked block.
I did a compression check, and the right bank cylinders all read fairly close between 130 and 135. The left bank readings are 120 to 140. The cylinder with 120 did have a spark plug that was much cleaner than all the other cylinders.
Does this sound like a head gasket?
Is there another test I can to do confirm before I start tearing it down (i.e.water pressure test?)?
Is there any difference between auto gaskets and marine engine gaskets?
Do you think I might have any other engine damage (i.e. bearings)?
Any other advice?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
