engine noise

hey guys!!,
I have a 1995 evinrude 115 intruder on a 1995 hydrasport 16.6 bass boat. Motor runs awesome!!!! but.... it is making a noise when i put it in gear. revved up in neutral, it's fine. But when in gear, it sounds like something sort of knocking. I have determined that it is not the powerhead. so before I tear into this thing, and spend a lot of money, I was wondering if anyone may have an idea what this may be. The noise speeds up and slows down with the motor. love to hear your thoughts.

1: Have you checked your gear oil?
2: Have the drive shaft been removed and re-installed without changing the spring clip/retainer preventing it from moving up and down?

hello haffiman37. yes the gear oil was changed. other than being as little dirty, it was pretty good. no metal chunks or water in it. to my knowledge the whole engine has not been touched. any ideas? thanks
 
i have never been inside a lower unit. a buddy of mine said it sounds like a broken tooth on the pinion gear. as i said, it's not really a knock, more like a loud tick. what do you think about his diagnosis?
