"I have something mixed up. Does anyone know where to download the sequence of nut, washer, spacer, leather washer, spring? I saw one once and it was very clear . The merc manual for my engine 78 350 MC I drive is not clear enough. It looks like one bushing is turned so the rubber is pointed away from the bell housing and the other is the opposite and going into it this was done by a mechanic. The engine seems to be tilted. My alignment tool should be here tommorrow but the outdrive would not go back in. I saw a clear diagram once I think for a later model but I can't find it now."

"slide the large washer on the bolt first, then the spacer. The leather washer goes in between the rear housing and the transom housing, the spring thing fits inside of it,The nut is held captive in the transom housing. Can you post a pic?"

"I see what is going on now the bushing on the coupler housing( bell housing) is not fitted up all the way in the opening, it has pulled down somehow and I will have to find a way to press it back up into the hole then the engine should be level and I can align it, whenever the tool shows up."

"According to the diagram everything is correctly sequenced as far as the flat washer, then spacer, then bushing, then leather and spring, then nut at the bottom. Are you saying that the bushing is unable to be reset into the housings opening once it has moved? The bushing was replaced in the housing but it is not staying in place, unsure why it would have moved, it came down by about 3/8 inch, do you think it was improperly installed or is the housings apperature is damaged as to not be able to hold the bushing in place and that is why it is moving and the housing will need to be replaced? Are there any options? This all started with the coupler failing, then the bushings and the connecting bolts, washers and spring and all being replaced along with the coupler, as to get all defects in one shot. It looks like that was wishful thinking. Any advice?"

"This all started with the coupler failing"

Bushing probably failed first. Replace the bushing per BtDr.
