Owner selling his boat with a 3.8 engine and OMC out-drive. He told me the "rear engine mount leaks" and a new part is appx. $900. From what I've seen on other boats (have not seen this boat)the engine mount is just a bracket to hold the engine: definitely not worth $900. Could he be mistaking this for some other part? Thanks

Don't Buy It....

It's a Dead Horse, with little or No parts support...."

"That's a Stringer drive 1

"That's a Stringer drive 1985 or older with hydraulic mounts, be lucky to find the part, don't compare this with a Mercruiser or even an OMC Cobra, totally different, steer clear."

"The rear motor mounts aren&#3

"The rear motor mounts aren't hydraulic, the front ones are. The leak could be a loose hydraulic line or the seals in the rams (hydraulic cylinders) maybe bad. The OMC Stringer uses these rams to raise and lower the motor to trim the boat as the out drive is connected similar to a car engine and transmission. The out drive is stationary. The Merc and the later OMC models raise and lower the out drive to trim the boat. I have replaced my seals, dougrussell.com has them. There is a guy that pops up on eBay a lot that sells the kit for like $45, which is a great price compared to russell.com Changing the seals really isn't that complicated. You will want to check the motor mounts the rams are attached to, make sure the oil has not penetrated the stringers. Mine had been leaking for years and the oil trashed the stringer. I had to tear out the wood and re-glass new mounts in. Major pain in the a$$!!!"

"that was me, but I quit ebaying them - too many fees and hassles, but I do still have the seal kits if anyone wants them can email me."

"Is there a way to modify this

"Is there a way to modify this design? I have a 4.3 model that my Dad gave me. Just before he gave it to me, he replaced these seals. In the fall of last year I noticed having to adjust the trim a lot so I assume I'm losing fluid.

This year I had to have my trim motor rebuilt so I blocked it in a good position so I could use it while waiting for the motor. It trims out pretty good so I'm dragging my feet to put the motor back in. I thought I read about a servo screw drive trim system on here. Is the hydraulic version convertable?"

"the hydraulic selectrim syste

"the hydraulic selectrim system is simple, effective, more powerful, and much more reliable than the worm screw units. Just fix it up right. The seals will last 20 years if you use good quality seals and if they are installed properly.
All parts of that system are readily available."

"I agree, the system works wel

"I agree, the system works well. The hardest part for me was removing the piston shaft from the motor mount. I finally took it in to O'Reilly's Auto Parts and a kid knocked them loose with an electric impact wrench."
