Hi Ive been doing some work on my mercury 110. having put the powerhead back on I now find I can't turn the engine over at all. Completely locked. Ive checked the gear shifter position and removed the plugs but its completely solid ??
Any ideas please ?

Jon

Lower unit stuck, pull the powerhead back out and see if it turns over now. Assuming your talking about a 110 (9.8) hp. or a 1966 1100 6 cylinder?

Scotland. It was running fine 3 weeks ago. I was just replacing the water impeller so this happened on reassembly. Feels like its jamming on something, v strange

Sounds like the water pump key has slipped out of position on re-assembly and is getting hung up in the slot in the water pump cartridge base, only allowing you to turn the engine over a certain distance. It's a stretch but easy to validate. Drop the gearcase back off and turn it by hand to see if that's the problem. Sometimes that little key will squirm its way out if you dont have the groove in the impeller lined up correctly when trying to install the impeller when you are turning the driveshaft clockwise as you enter into the pump housing.

Thinking this further, if you are installing the larger ID 0.456" inside diameter impeller on a 0.438" driveshaft (they made two differnt id impellers and driveshafts) it might allow for the key to slip down just enough into the the slot in the water pump base and the key could get hung up.

Thanks by hand the starter rope system I removed to exclude an issue with that. So I’m simply gripping the red flywheel by hand

Pull the flywheel and see if there any interference keeping it from rotating. Otherwise, tear it down. When it was running last time, did it make any noises before shutting it down? Why did you replace the waterpump? Did it run hot?

OK thanks yes it was running hot and in fact the owner melted the top of the water pipe plastic flange where it connects with the powerhead. No noises before shutting down and as I said it turns freely unto 180 degrees so its not seized.

So flywheel pulled off no problem. However Im no further forward. Surely being able to turn it 180 degrees one way then back again must mean something ?? Surely I don't have to dismantle the whole engine ??

Thanks everyone for your help with this one. It was the plastic Venturi which had fallen into the engine . Just trying to work out the least invasive way to get it out ?
