Engine knock before and after new lifters, pushrods and rockers 360 cu V8

Found engine knock caused by bent push rod and hole in rocker arm against which it wore. Replaced all lifers, push rods, and rockers. Engine now runs good but still knocks mostly at low rpms. With stethoscope found knock in area of no 2&4 cylinders. Removed valve cover to inspect, then ran engine. Found violent oil squirt from area of no 6&8 cylinders and rather dry near cyl 2&4. Removed other valve cover and found oil sort of oozes all over when engine runs...no violent squirts like on the other side. Two questions; 1. Why the violent oil squirts? Is this normal? 2 What is causing the knock. Some steam from exhaust which dissapates once underway and engine warms up. Afraid to go on long cruise unitl knock is fixed.
Boat is 1981 Trojan F32.

What say you Jeff ?

try pulling the spark plug wires one by one to see of the noise goes away or decreases. Oil kinda pours slowly on my 318's. Make sure you have the rockers arranged correctly on the shaft.

I tried pulling plug wires one by one...no change in sound. Mind you, the knock is not always there. It is intermittent, mostly at low rpm and when engine is not at full temp although he has come at full temp. I double checked the rockers on the shaft. They are installed correctly. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Rocker Arm Shafts
When installing the rocker arms on a shaft type system of a Chrysler engine, the shafts must be installed correctly. There is a difference in the top and the bottom, as well as side to side. The shafts must be installed with the oil holes pointed to the bottom and to the outside of the engine, toward the valve. This is the only way the shafts can adequately oil the rocker arms. Premature wear will result if the shafts are installed improperly.

Hey pal, what was happening when the problem started? I suspect you will find a difference in the installed valve stem height on the affected side of the engine. These motors are pretty "bulletproof". Your probably gonna have to pull the head......and I'd do both. After all, its your boat.

Thanks daves69, your info on how to install the rocker shafts is very helpful. I did not follow this procedure when I installed them. I will pull the valve covers and check and re-install the way you describe. I will report on results.

Dave69 I re-installed the rocker shafts as directed by the instructions you posted and it solved my problem! I had the shafts installed upside down on one side and bass akwards on the other. I now have no knock, no squirting oil when I run the engine with the valve covers off. Thanks again for providing me the solution.
