1989 3.0L had ignition changed to electronic; coil gets real hot; do I need a different coil when changed from points and condensor system?
It is not the gas.

Ayuh,... What did the Instructions that came with the conversion say,..??

'n What conversion are We talkin' 'bout anyways,..??

off the top of my head i think the old coil should have about 9 volts, i could be wrong.

How it got cut down from 12 v is a resister wire or " resister ".

Ether way the new electronic dist or kit should take a full 12 volts.

Most kits recommend a hei coil, or not the standard coil.

In the end i just don't think your coil is getting enough juice.

Did you remove the ballast resister or wire? If so, you're feeding 12 volts to a coil at all times that is designed to run at 10 or so. If the instructions tell you to remove the resistor or wire so the new module gets a full 12 volts, then it should be advising to change out the coil. If it's something like a Pertronix conversion kit, then you should still be checking dwell and timing. Pretty sure incorrect dwell can saturate the primary winding in the coil causing it to heat up as well.

I like the input. Unfortunately the company that installed new ignition is out of business. Not sure type etc.
It seems when coil cools with ice engine starts again. I do not think I have any resistor wire so I assume I just need a coil that will deliver a full 12 volts and not 9 or 10. I could fry a egg on the current coil.

ok run a wire straight from the pos side of the battery to the pos side of the coil. Run it that way see if the coil gets hot.

To shut off the motor you need to pull that wire off the battery or install a switch.

NEVER TELL SOMEONE to hot wire a boat and PULL the wire off if "YOU WANT TO SHUT IT OFF""

Come on Chief!!

What are you thinking?

This is not YAH WHOO BACK YARD HAMMER MECHANICS AFTER A COUPLE OF COLD BEERS!! Ya gotta tell them or help as "IF" you were/are some what proffesional!!

The correct answer is to go to a automotive store and buy a ballast ressitor and install it. Confirm ~ 9 volts +/- at the coil when running and retest to see if the coil gets hot. It also would be reccommended to replace the coil as this one has obvisously overheated and that is not a good thing!!

JMHO!

What is a hei coil?

If I buy a new 12 volt ACCEL or MSD Blaster 2F coil do I need a resistor or not? Will either coil work? One better than other?

The part # for the elec conv was 18-5297 but I have nothing else said on my invoice. Thanks.
