just bought a replacement engine for my old boat. tag near starter reads A371027 . under the number, is the letter "L" It's a 305. Can anyone tell me the year and rotation?
thanks

Three choices from the site I went to

Someone else may have specific info but I do not here.

Looks to be between a 1982 -1986 (4 years of production).

L means left hand or STANDARD rotation, if you were to be looking FROM the REAR of the motor the engine would be spinning c'clockwise or to the left.

I guess it is like this or at least how I can explain it,

serial numers started lets say at 100000, then 6218462 when that type 305 motor was used then somewhere after that came A371027 the one you have then when they ended that engine block model (gm ended it actually to a newer style block of some kind but still a 305 ) that last serial number given to that motor block group was 0B525981.

a serial number with NO letters is older the letter A comes before the letter OB

Mercs serial numbers can be confusing but dont get hung up on them. What info I posted is exactly what your serial number is, (that motor/block was used for 4 years) if you want the specific year then someone with merc software or a better web site to identify it may chime in.

does that make sense?
