Please help

I had just bought me a 68 T craft with a gm inline 6 mercruiser marine engine in it and it has a cracked block in it (no mistaking it) and i didn't find this out until i was in water!!! Would a 292 inline 6 chevy motor work the same? Even if i was to just use the block???

You can get a car motor to work in a boat, but the block for a car motor has thinner cylinder walls and such which they could have difficult times with the back pressure that boat's receive. I've asked that question before, and was told it's a bad idea to try.

....um, get a boat engine?
I know that sounds like a shocker, but the engine would be for a boat, right?
Check junk yards, ebay, craig's list etc. There are used boat eninges out there.

Pretty good chance the intake/exh manifold is also freeze cracked.

For the motor:
Any Chevrolet 250 block auto or truck will be identical to what you are pulling out of your boat. only differences will be camshaft and core plugs. No thinner walls, no different alloys, no different bearings... In 1968 they just used truck motors.

reuse your marine cam with new lifters, and buy brass core plugs for the block.
If you boat in salt water, replace the head gasket with a modern composite gasket with stainless fire rings e.g. FelPro

swap everything over (manifold, fuel system, ignition etc) and go boating.

292 bad idea- they look similar, and can be swapped if the 292 has the front engine mount boss in the block (many did not) but there's enough differences to make the project drag on forever.

Ayuh,... You were told Wrong....

You can use a car or truck block, but many were cast without the boss for mounting the front mount...
Find the Right casting,+ your Golden...

As Hystat says, the 292 is a much taller motor, so some things won't line up...

Using a 292 needs wet exaust hose for the riser connection . block is 2 inches taller. Almost sure the stock motor was 200 hp.
.030 pistons and a cam will make it think it`s a 350 motor and you will need the 1.50 gearing.Buddy built one, I know

Michigan Motorz has new long and short block engines.
+1 certainly the quickest and easiest way back on to the water
