Engine dies around 2500rpm

Hi,

I have a mercury 3L, I think 1992, and the engine dies at around 2500 rpm. It idles very smooth and runs smooth until 2500 rpm hits very it’s dies out. I changed the fuel, fuel filter (had water in it), emptied the gas tank (had water in it also), changed for new spark plugs. It was running perfectly fine last year before we put in storage now this problem.

I was reading online maybe the anti-siphon valve but what are your thoughts ? Fuel pump ?

Thanks

Further explain "Engine dies"?
Is it quick, slow, if you throttle back will it keep running?
After it dies will it restart, and is it hard to start or easy?

It’s a quick dying, but if I pull back the throttle sometimes it won’t die and sometimes it will. It starts right back up if it dies

This is what the distributors look like

Try this, There is a shift interrupter switch on the shift plate, it has 2 wires on it.

Take boat out to open water and take a jumper wire or stop and connect the 2 wires together. What your doing is disabling the switch. Once this is done you can start the motor and run it. If it makes it past 2500 and up without issue than the switch is bad or the adjustment of the switch needs to be redone.

Also note, with the switch bypassed you will most likely not be able to put motor in neutral. If that happens turn motor OFF, remove jumper and can restart and drive

Isn’t this for gearing ? Even if I am on neutral and reving up it still does it. When I meant die quick is like it’s missing fuel, takes about a second or two when dying if that makes sense.

ok, that's different than what I was thinking, thought you were running under load.

Still try the bypass of switch in neutral

Might be a shift plate is moving the switch and killing spark

Yah I didn’t precise it sorry for that! I will give it a try when I get back home. You don’t think it’s a gaz issue ? I feel like if it’s electrical I won’t be able to pull back on the throttle to keep it alive.

Don't know what gaz is?
