"I have a 1998 Yahama 150 outboard, went out last time, no problems, went to store boat for the winter and went to start at home and engine rolled over but would not start, has fuel but no spark all of a sudden... any input? this is the first problem I have ever had, purchased new in 1998"

"Rodney, you didn't list the model (however the 150's are all similar at with regards to the ignition) and I am assuming that any kill switches you have are functioning and in the (on) position.

You say no spark. Did you check or are you assuming that. If you have no spark at all of the cylinders you have either toasted your stator or CDI itself."

Im not sure how to check the kill switch if it is working properly should the kill switch have 12 volts on both wires withthe ignition on or does it just complete the ground whats the proper way to test the kill swith

hay graham lamb thanks for you

hay graham lamb thanks for your responce the model # is a 1998 c150txrw I did check the tether kill switch and its good I dont have any spark at cylenders if it is the cdi how do I trouble shoot the cdi and or the stator or how can tell wich one could be the the problem thanks so much for your help

"You can check the stator with

"You can check the stator with an ohm meter (multi-meter). The quick check is you simply look for continuity between the leads (which indicates the windings are intact).

I'm not at home right now, but will look up and post which leads you need to test since I assume you have a couple for ignition and a couple for the charging circuit.

Basically, you determine that the cdi is the problem by testing everything else as good - there is really no other way (at home) to test it..."

"Rodney, drop me an email and I can send you the manual for your model (it's big)make the subject LIT-18616-01-87 and I'll get it off to you..."
