Engine compression difference. Is it significant?

I have a 95 Evinrude 115 that has the compression measurements 110, 110, 110 and 75 for the 4 cylinders. The motor runs good and will still pull a skier without any problem. I bring this question up because I want to sell the boat and fully disclose any problems. Is this a significant problem that I should discount the price of the boat and make full disclosure about it to the buyer? What is your opinion?

There certainly is an issue with the cylinder that has 75 PSI----Scored piston / blown head gasket / broken piston rings.-----If it is a " crossflow engine " you can remove the wee bypass cover to inspect piston and rings.----A $2.00 gasket will need to be replaced when you do that.

pretty sure its a crossflow and pretty sure you have a cracked ring...you are more honest than most dealers selling a used noat...

Broken rings is very common on the crossflow engines.--------------------Outboards live a tough life and are often operated by folks who do not know how to maintain and run a high performance machine.

There is a 35 psi difference between the highest and lowest compression reading, obviously a cause for concern.

Remove the cylinder head in order to inspect the head gasket, sealing surfaces of the head and crankcase (block), the piston, and the cylinder walls.

Let us know what you find.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

i think thats why a lot of people are one time boat owners...they pay good money for a rig and dont maintain it and in a few short years sell it as as a piece of junk and never buy again..one of two things a new boat owner has to realize has to occur up front..first option is to spend time and a little money on maintenance...the 2nd option is to spend more money and have the maintenance done...and having the maintenance done is not that expensive if a person considers the upfront purchase price and the cost of running a boat and the fact that when you are on the water you have a reliable rig...i can guarantee you that the average boat owner can take a lawn chair and set down with a cold one or a cup of coffee and just set and go over his rig from the trailer up he will come up with things that need doing..but that aint going to happen...too many people think a hot charge on a battery and gas in the tank every spring is all they need...
this is not meant to be a dig at the person that started this string...just a few remarks to agree with racer....i too have had at least one cracked ring...

I want to thank everyone for all the great responses. So now that I know that this is a significant problem I have to decide whether to try and fix the problem or discount the sale of the boat. I think I will at least check the head gasket since that would be the simplest thing to do. A couple of you are talking about maintenance not being properly performed. This boat has been properly maintained but has seen heavy use pulling water skiers, wake boards and rafts over the years(averaged about 15 boat trips a year). If I gave the boat away today I still got my monies worth. Evinrude makes a good outboard.
