Engine Changeout Help 1972 165

I am looking at a 165hp inline six that is complete and has been removed from the boat. It is 1 year newer than what I took out of my boat, 1972 Skipjack. It has mercruiser components and has a enclosed cooling system. The motor block is exactly the same as what I took out of my boat. My engine had all OMC components which I have removed from my engine. I have everything ready to go onto another motor. I had intended to buy a remanufactured long block, but I have a chance to buy a used engine at a reasonable price. The person who is selling it is going to start it for me to hear it run. I know first off that a compression test is a must. How much compression should this engine have and how much of a difference in cylinder psi is reasonable. Will my OMC components fit and what other things should I be in store for if I purchase this engine. I have OMC Intermediate and outdrive all fresh rebuilt with 0 hours on them. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Engine Changeout Help

the OMC stuff should bolt on just fine.

all cylinders should be above 110 psi, and the difference from one end to the other should not be more than 10% or so

google how to compression test an engine - probably lots of info - also youtube vidson it probably
