Engine alignment

Hello All,
I have my drive removed so I decided to check the engine alignment, (1989 Cobra- 5.8L). The alignment tool would not go into the coupler. I took some measurements. The tool is 1.010" DIA. for the first 2.200 inches, 1.150" DIA. for the next 2.750 inches and 1.375" DIA. for the remainder of the length of the bar. Puzzled, I tried to slide a plain piece of 1.000" round stock into the coupler and it will not go. Do I have the right tool? I read somewhere that Merc,Volvo and OMC all use the same tool? Any ideas?

Ayuh,.... That's Correct,.... I'd guess ya gotta shift/ move the motor abit...
