Engine alignment...

Can anybody tell me where I can find the P/N for an alignment tool? I want to purchase a used tool for a V-8 Mercruiser (Chevy SB), Alpha 1 outdrive, 1988. Thanks, Bob

I was about to start a thread on engine alignment myself as I was thinking of buying a Mercruiser yoke for an Alpha drive - they seem to be a lot cheaper than alignment tools in my kneck of the woods (UK) - and using that for engine alignment .... Does anyone know if there is any reason why the yoke - separated from the drive assembly - cannot be used for this purpose?

Yes I can give you the reason

The alignment tool has a different Outside diameter than the splined shaft. There are two orings on the splined shaft that are not a solid enough propperly align the gimbal bearing to the coupler. It will get you close but not exact!!

Tonight When I get home I will measure my alignment tool and post it. Then you can have one made!! Considering you are only going to use it a few times it can be made out of what ever material is cheapest...Like cheap steel.

It does not have to me made to the full length either like the factory one I have.

I found the data see attached.

For the $19.00 buy the tool. I had one made and it is rusted bad. The tool won't rust. I had to pay to have it made. Did I really save anything?

Well..$19 to buy it and $46 for shipping? Anyone know of a place to get one cheap in ontario?

Similar problem here in the UK except HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs) get involved as well and they want Duty and VAT of about +25% on the combined purchase and shipping costs from the USA! So much for free trade! ... It's not a problem we have making purchases within the EU, but then we don't make decent engines like Mercruisers and Crusaders.
