Engine Alignment

Finally got the tool for the engine alignment in my 3.0 Mercruiser.
When I tried to align before it seemed that I couldn't get the right pitch by moving the front of the engine up and down. I have the spring type washer and fibre washer on the rear of the engine as per the parts book.
Does one have to fudge the rear mounts with washers to get the thing aligned or is the rear portion machined to be properly aligned and the front is the only adjustable factor.
Thanks
Bert

"the rear mounts should need no adjustment. if they are the problem, they are worn out. I doubt this is your problem. please elaborate on your project. is this a new coupler? what caused you to start this project? some details may lead to an answer."

Nothing special. i bought the boat, with a seized engine from the guy letting water run into the intake and into No. 2 cylinder.
I just can't seem to get on board with a proper alignment. I find now after you tell me that a rear slignment is not a problem so I have to work on the front mount.

Bert:

Are the front engine mount bases solid? I had one solid and one soft that made alignment impossible. Had to put a jack over a 2"X6" under the port mount to support the engine and tear out the rotted wood from the fiberglass shell and install a a number of 3/4" plywood pieces that were epoxied into place to create a new base. I closed the outside of the base w/F-glass and then drilled a number of 1/4" holes in the top around the perimeter of the base and injected L&L epoxy until it was full. It took 10-15 days to set up. I then drilled a new set of pilot holes and reinstalled the engine mount.

"3.0- only one front mount. the gimbal bearing may be cocked out of position. (theres quite a bit of movement possible) could also be worn. check with flashlite. do the splines look sharp? I have found when alignment is way out, it's much easier to suspend front of engine rather than moving the nuts. at least till youi get it close."

I had the adapter off when doing the engine it looked good, the splines on the shaft are good too.

I just got the boat into a heated work shop and I was going to check the front mount sub structure. I have purchased some CPES for the eventuality plus another few repairs I have to do. I've tried the suspended front end on the first go around with the inferior tool I had. Time for another go at it I guess.
Guy your package is made up and to be mailed out tomorrow.

Thanks Bert.

CAUTION! Whether you are indoors or outdoors when you use CPES make sure you have a respirator on so you don't succumb to the fumes. The vapors and fumes are highly flammable. Have somebody around when you are working in the bilge where the fumes will concentrate.

For all who have never used CP

For all who have never used CPES (clear penetrating epoxy sealant) it is a great product to strengthen dry rotted wood and waterproof new wood. If the wood to be repaired is damp use lacquer thinner to dry it out.

I use a plastic liquid dishwashing soap bottle to mix a batch. The liquid can be squirted with it while the push/pull cap seals the CPES when closed. When installing screws into a new floor just dribble a 1/2 spoonful where the screw is going and drive it in for a sealed screw.

Attach a nipple tip and plastic hose to the bottle to get to hard to reach areas.

"Used the CPES on the front mount under my Stb engine, drilled the lower portion of the mount to let the traped moisture drain off and then finished the job off with a heater.
Suspended the engine with an overhead chain at approx the right height then injected the mount with the CPES.
Finished the job with std epoxy resin a few days later then let the engine back down after another 24hrs,
"Beautifull" worked like a charm, however I do intend to cut out and rebuild the mount properly when I fit my new engines later this year.

PS: to inject it quickly in I used a large disposable medical syringe.

Guy
How long does the CPES remain liquid while in your squeeze bottle? Taking in to account temp mixture etc.
Thanks

"Bert:

I worked with it in Mar. & Apr. It stayed liquid several days in the garage. I was surprised by it thinking the 1/2 cup I left overnight would be a rock--still liquid I believe due to the solvents in the mixture. When exposed to air the liquid will soak into raw wood and also evaporate quickly, espec. the warmer the temp. Solvents will give you a headache."
