Engine alarm

I have a 1988 270 hp twins and the alarm on the starboard engine will not go off after the motor starts. I have changed the oil and temp sensor and both oil pressure and temp are good when the motor is running but the alarm is still on. Where is the connection on the motor for the alarm for when the motor dies?? and thanks for any advice in advance

Are you sure that there is not a second sending unit that is for just the alarm? I would guess that you are going to have to trace the wire back to where it hooks in.

That or one of your temperature switches is closed circuit at low temperature. You can determine this by disconnecting allof the temp switches--which hopefully stops the racket--then plugging them back in one at a time until...you know.

I HATE those ~*#@!% temp switches! Had to go through at least a half dozen of them--all brand new--before finding one that worked properly.

That vintage has THREE temperature SWITCHES that are for the audio warning horn...if you changed SENSORS, it will have no effect on the warning horn. The three switches are wired in parallel so any one can activate the alarm. if you disconnect all three and the horn sounds with the key, it is most likely that the wire between the closest switch and the horn is grounded...the 3rd switch is the gear overheat warning switch.

thanks for the help it did end up being the temp switch for the velvet drive transmission.

Now that you've identified the culprit, you're not out of the woods yet. You need to TEST the new temp switch you buy in a bucket of boiling water (using a meter on the leads) to ensure it works.

I went through a half dozen NEW ones before finding one that actually worked. Seriously.
