Eliminating Muffler Custom Exhaust

So I have had a exhaust leak in the bilge and have located it to the fiberglass mufflers ( look like 5 gallon barrels) The were manufactured with end caps that were glassed together. The seem of these caps have begun to seperate and crack. I removed them and wrapped the seem with new glass and resin but somehow I still have the leak. I guess it's possible it's coming from somewhere else but after deep inspection unlikely.

My question is... I am considering removing the mufflers and incorporating a sweep T fitting and running it without. Anyone see any big problems with this? My exhaust exits rear thru hull above water line. The exhaust port is kind of enclosed in a section of the integrated swim platform with 2 smaller holes to allow water/exhaust to exit so I believe this would prevent water surge when backing down. I understand it will probabley be pretty loud but the boat is a sporty express cruiser so I think it may be alright.

"I have a buddy who repaired his f-glass mufflers by removing them, removing the end caps, then epoxying the the works back together. This is how they were built at the factory.

"I'm with Jeff, I would repair the old one. Prepping the surface is the secret to a successful repair. I would use West Systems epoxy resin."

I believe the Coast Guard Regulations require that boats that operate within 5 miles of land requires a muffler. I have a Gibson 50 foot with 2X454 CIDs. The only muffle action is by the mixing of cooling water into the exhaust. There is no room in a Gibson for a muffler.
