The YL624AV (Mallory btw) is a mechnical ignition distributor..... (i.e., contact points)
The YLM624AV is VR triggering.... (i.e., Variable Reluctor)
Question: Why are you wanting to remove the cam?
If memory serves me, there will be a small keeper that must be removed.... yes/no?
NOTE and a friendly FYI:
Since this is a 1987 Distributor, the unit is 24 years old, and may need to be checked to see if the advancing mechanism is offering the correct curve/limit for Marine use.
All it takes is for one cam weight return spring to have become compromised, and your curve/limit could be off.
This could..... (key word being "could") cause the TA to come on too early, causing detonation.
IMO, you'd best have it run on a distributor machine to varify the mechanical advance curve/limit before re-installing it.....
or better yet, replace it with a YLM624AV, and rid yourself of contact points!
If by chance this is a YLM, note that Mallory will spec a gap between the reluctor and sensor unit.
(this sets the dwell angle... similar to that of a contact point distributor)
Be sure that nothing metallic is used between the two.
Just an FYI for ya!
