1987 crusader 350 270 hp dist, yl624av, instructions say to remove cam from dist shaft using a puller
cam will not come off , mallory says it should come off. bent 2 pullers trying to gey off. anyone have any ideas

Is this a mallory E-Spark conversion kit? I did one a while ago, on a saltwater engine, and had to heat the cam to liberate it. You may find it easier (and safer) to remove the distributor first.

The other thing is to use a Quality puller....the imported stuff isn't machined true (in most cases) and will cause far more harm than any benefit they provide.

If in doubt, just take the distributor and the kit to a competent machine shop....shouldn't be more than 0.5 hours labor for the whole swap.

took it to a dist shop they tried for a day and give up , i bought a good puller from ace hardware and it finally came off thanks

The YL624AV (Mallory btw) is a mechnical ignition distributor..... (i.e., contact points)
The YLM624AV is VR triggering.... (i.e., Variable Reluctor)

Question: Why are you wanting to remove the cam?
If memory serves me, there will be a small keeper that must be removed.... yes/no?

NOTE and a friendly FYI:
Since this is a 1987 Distributor, the unit is 24 years old, and may need to be checked to see if the advancing mechanism is offering the correct curve/limit for Marine use.
All it takes is for one cam weight return spring to have become compromised, and your curve/limit could be off.
This could..... (key word being "could") cause the TA to come on too early, causing detonation.

IMO, you'd best have it run on a distributor machine to varify the mechanical advance curve/limit before re-installing it.....
or better yet, replace it with a YLM624AV, and rid yourself of contact points! :D

If by chance this is a YLM, note that Mallory will spec a gap between the reluctor and sensor unit.
(this sets the dwell angle... similar to that of a contact point distributor)
Be sure that nothing metallic is used between the two.

Just an FYI for ya!
