"I am new to this forum. I own a 1966 Chris Craft Commander with 2 Chrysler 318 engines. I am trying to do as much maintenance on the boat as I can, but have little or no experience with motor mechanics. To this end, I consider this forum to be a treasure trove of relevant information.

I have purchased 2 new electronic ignition distributors etc. on ebay. They are described as:

"NOS Mopar electronic ignition conversion kit for all 1962-72 Chrysler vehicles with 273, 318, 340, 360 engine. Converts standard point type ignition system to all electronic. Kit includes a brand original STOCK electronic distributor assembly from the Chrysler Indianapolis Electrical Plant with correct vacuum advance, correct heavy duty tan # 2444507 cap, black 1838516 rotor, Mopar Performance wire harness with clips, ballast resistor, 4-pin Mopar Performance orange electronic control box and installation instructions. Note: You will receive a resistor without the metal strap. This kit uses an original Mopar STOCK ignition distributor with stock advance curve, not with the quick advance springs. Compare this distributor to that funky looking thing you get from the dealer or speed shop which is likely made in India, China, or Korea. Never change points again and get better mileage and much better performance. You can also scrap that old lean burn system with this kit. Use this in your 1962-72 Plymouth Valiant, Barracuda, Duster, Cuda, Belvedere, Satellite, Road Runner, GTX, Dodge Coronet, Charger, Dart, Demon, R/T, Super Bee,Chrysler, Imperial, Fury, Polara, Monaco, Dodge truck with 273, 318, 340, 360 engine. Check out our other auctions and Ebay store."

My concern is, since the engines are counter rotating, will these units work on both, or just on the engine that turns in the conventional direction?

Any other guidance on installation would be very much appreciated."

The distributors on counter-rotating Mopars turn the same way: you set up the wires on the cap the other way.

You're gonna need far more qualified help to do this job than this here web site!

Can you expand a little on the pitfalls you foresee?
I do have some help here but want to understand what I am facing.

"..."So I'm in a little over my head, eh?"

"You'll need a step ladder to touch your toes!" (A line from my 1st unsold novel.)

The Mopar distributor goes in one of two ways, so you're either okay or out 180 degrees. That's a big plus. But you still have to get all those 16 wires exactly where they all go--and the reverse rotation distributor gets set up backwards. Then you still have to time them both. Then there's the electrical part--and those wires and circuits: the start only and run circuits...

Ready to ask for help yet!

"Jeff,

At some point ya just gotta jump into the pool, right?
My neighbor is an engineer who knows a lot more than I do about these things.

We spent some time on the boat last night and I picked up the new wires and plugs today. The distributor, points, rotor on the port side were a dog's breakfast.

The distributors are on their way from the ebay seller in New Jersey.

So here I go..... S-P-L-A-S-H
