('88 4.3l v6) Does a Volvo penta shift system have an ESA module that would require changing if converted to an electronic ignition? There are a couple of options, but points are not a bad system if you know how to maintain them, I still have points in my '88 4.3 V6.
You can:
convert the points to a Petronix system, this keeps the original distributor but just replaces the points with an electronic triggering system
replace the whole distributor with the GM/Delco Marine EST unit
however, in both cases you will have to replace the ESA module in the Cobra shift system with one that will work with an electronic distributor, the original one will not.
I have found that the points last me about 5 years or so, I replace them when they start to look pitted.
ThanksNope Volvo does not need an ESA or shift interrupt system.
