Electronic ignition and coil installation

Ok so I have purchased the electric ignition and flame-thrower coil. I am going to install it but can someone help me and make sure i am going to do it right.

Electric Ignition - black and white wire goes to negative terminal on coil. black wire goes to the wire i removed from the coil negative side.

Flamethrower Ignition Coil - positive terminal has a wire running from it to a ground. negative terminal has the wire going to the black and white on the electric ignition on the distributor

Am i missing anything? Or should this pretty much get it going?

Is this the Hurkleburzer electronic ignition, or the Izonzimer-Zoomfroid electronic ignition system?
We can be of more help if you provide ALL Information up front. :D :D

Since you mention "flame thrower", I have my suspicions that this is a Pertronix Hall Effect kit!

You need to tell us what type of pertronics system you purchased, here ate the two they show on there site in schematic form.

Instructions say to run the + to either a 12v battery or chassis. The Flamethrower coil has a internal resistor so I would not be hooking it up to any ballast

So did I purchase the wrong type of ignition?? It looks like I may have. This is for positive ground.. A little help here..... A positive ground system means that the positive terminal on the battery is run to the chasis somewhere???

Yes it means just that, ground is off the positive terminal and the chassis is ground as the positive terminal connects to it. Negative terminal goes to the devices, lights, switches etc. Older vehicle and tractors used this system, in the early < 1955 vehicles, until it was discovered that electricity did not flow the way the scientist said it did..

Yes I agree

WRONG parts.

You need the negative ground system and you also need a NON resistor coil. The fact is you can use your coil and only need the electronic parts that go into the distributor.

Your engine wire harness already has a resistor wire biult in. (~ 2 ohms) If you add a internal resistor coil you will double the resistance and that will not be very good for your ignition/spark.

When you see a vacuum diaphram advance unit, you can just about assume that this is an Automotive kit.

To my knowledge, the auto industry hasn't used a reverse polarity battery system for years.
Negative is commonly the chasis connection.
Our Marine applications do not have nor use a chasis connection.

Here's the Pertronix kit that you'll want.

I dislike the Pertronix kits with a passion...... but with your engine, you'd be spending several hundred dollars, or more, to purchase an actual Electronic Ignition system..... and I'm not familiar with one for the 470.

Mallory does list a YL648AV ignition for Mercruiser 470, but this is a contact points unit.
This would change to a YLM or YLU if you could find it in electronic.

Here is a similar thread from October 2011.
