The mercury switch is there so you can't start the motor unless it is in the "down" position - just a safety feature for both you and the motor - you won't lose your face to a turning prop and the motor won't kill itself from running with no water pumping..."

Brown is the correct color in

Brown is the correct color in those years. The brown wire must go to the charge rectifer. It needs to be moved off the switch-box.
