"I'm having trouble tracking down an electrical problem on my 86 Glasply/470 merc,it will run for a bit then shut down / the positive side of the coil wires back to the auto choke wires heat up and I lose the spark, I have replaced the points and condensor, Could a bad coil short out the ignition to the point where it statrs heating things up? Thanks"

That is called a resistor wire and is supposed to get very warm. When it dies is there 5 to 6 volts at the coil + terminal? Yes? Try a new coil. No? Replace resistor wire.

"Thanks for the help, It gets hot to the point that the electrical tape wrap was melting around the harness. what if the distributor wire ( neg side of coil ) was damaged but not broken. I have a suspicion that it was pinched between the disrt. and block when the timming was being set, I've checked it with a tester light and it's getting current through it. This all stated happening right about the time when I was messing with the timing and setting the points, up until then the engine ran fine. Thanks again for your input,I can get through most but electicas is not my Bag"
