"I tried to start my 1996 150

"I tried to start my 1996 150 johnson today on one battery. I switched to trwo when it didn't start right away. It started and ran fine for five minutes, when it started smoking. I pulled the cover and found a wire that was glowing red that ran down between the post the cylinder heads.

Did I fry something by using one battery or was this a coincidental failure or grounding? Why would this wire glow?

Any help is appreciated greatly."

"It was the rectifier. I was surprised when I clipped the wire that glowed (the hot lead) , the engine still started. How is that?"
