hi, 2 years ago I bought a electric shift gearcase to fit my 60hp 1970.The one that was on it had 1 vent plug. This one the guy said it was from a 55 hp 1969 this gear case has 2 vent plugs and drain plug. After looking at pitchures on different sites the 69 55 hp shows only 1 vent plug. Can someone verify what year and hp had the 2 vent plugs.I want to order a seal kit for it.allso does anyone no what years and hp will fit the 1970 60 hp electric shift units.I was told as long as it comes off a 3 cylinder it will fit.Butt some of the splines are different on the main drive shaft.I have the 4 spline that goes up into the powerhead. And I have the long shaft VS the short. Any of you old school tecks got any info on the electric shift units. I no a lot of people who think it was a bad thought by johnson back in the day.Butt mine has treated me good.I keep the oil up and clean and use the type c lower unit oil. When I first got this lower unit and put it on it took on water. After trying to find the problem with water in the unit doing the pre/vac test. The problem was the main needlebearing for the shaft under the water pump.It would test fine in the tank with both pre/vac. Butt if the shaft was turned there came the bubbles.I did a oil change about a week ago and the oil had a little water in the unit. The oil was not milky but it was discolored.Hopefully it is just the 2 prop shaft seals.I was thinking of maybe making this lower unit my winter project with a full tear down.Or am i asking for troulbe as i am clueless with the electric shift units.Allthough I felt the same way when I took off the powerhead lastyear to change the upper crank bearing.Only to find it needed a full rebuild. And after many post on this site it was running like a timex this spring. Thanks Tony

The 50 HP --2 cylinder electric shift for 71 and 72 had a smaller driveshaft and different spline.-------------------As far as the 2 vent verses 1 vent screw lower units -----------JUST DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT.--------------3 cylinder 68 -72 all fit !!

Racerone, thank you for the info.So with the 68-72 gearcases it seems only the 55 hp, 60 hp 65 hp will mate up on my 1970 60 hp eletric lower unit. Are all the gear ratio,s the same?
