"My 4.3lx gen+ 2 bbl. would not start today. Always beeen kind of a hard cold starter, but would start great after short warm-up. Wouldn't start or even light off today. Thoght it was time for carb. adjustment or rebuild, but it didn't seem like it was getting gas. Kill switch is in run. after not seeing any gas in the carb., I took the fuel line into the carb. off and put a cup there and turned the boat over. The cup was dry. Is the fuel pump my problem? Should I definitely see gas going into the cup while I crank the engine? Any other suggestions to make sure? Boat's not out of gas.

Thanks"

Glad you are still alive. What you did w/the cup was dumbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb! Be glad no gas came out of the line. What year?

Is the pump mechanical? Yes? There is a filter in the dome. Some electric filters have a filter on one end.

It's a 1997. I think it is electric. It is an in-line lift type pump. Has a place to connect the wires to it. I forgot to say I disconnected the coil wire before trying to get some gas to flow. What's the right way to test for fuel pump output without a flow measuring tool? I'm glad I didn't blow-up too. Thanks.

Is there fuel in the filter?

Is there fuel in the filter? Fuel pickup could have come off in the tank. Did the fuel pump run when you jumped it? If not then trace the wires in the loom and look for a corroded connection.

"Guy,
Thanks for your help. there was fuel in the water seperaring fuel filter, but none in the lines. I figured the fuel in the lines gravity fed back to the tank when I removed the fuel line at the carb.

To see if it was a bad elec. fuel pump, I bypassed the starter and tried to run the fuel pump just for a few seconds with the fuel lines all back connected and without having to crank the engine. Nothing.

Next, I tried to light test the input to the pump.If it had power but wouldn't run, maybe the pump is shot. But it would not light test using the ground at the electrical connection. Only when I grounded the light back to the battery would it light. I looked for loose ground wires or anything loose, but the wires are all wraped and there is no telling where the black wire off of this clip-on socket is actually grounded. Could it be as simple a break in this ground wire or did I miss something?

Thanks."

"I think I just figured out why the lamp test didn't work. Everything is gounded back to the battery and without the ground cables connected in the battery compartment, no path. I think the power is good. Any reason not to test the pump by bypassing the starter?

Rob"

"On most engines...

"On most engines...

1) Short out the low oil pressure switch (pull connector, use fine wire to jumper connector holes.)
2) Turn ignition on (do not crank)... pump should run."
