elect problem on 115 (6) Mariner

Hi,can anybody be some assistance to me,i was checking my motor Mariner 115 strait 6 ser.OB 260079 and found above the 2 cdis a square little black box with 4 wires,i saw its burned out, can anybody tell me what is it for and what does it,i didnt start the motor so i dont know what will happen.

sounds like the voltage regulator to me
