ECM recalibration

"In previous threads I have sought suggestions in dealing with a rough idle in one of my Crusader 8.2 MPI engines. In working with Crusader(they have been great) they had me remove and ship both ECMs to them to check and recalibrate if necessary. I got them back this week, both were recalibrated. They said that they updated the programming as they were pretty old (1998) and I should see significant improvement in how the engines perform. Can anyone explain to me just what and how this recalibration works and why it will improve performance? My boat is still on the hard so I have not been able to see how it runs with the recalibrated ECMS."

"The mapping of an ECM is done so the motor can react correctly in a bazillion ways to various operating conditions. This is an extensive, extremely complex process and, though they try, sometimes the result is less than optimum. Since back then the programming has been improved, so they upgraded it. They're 'smarter' now.

Get it?

Makes sense with the huge advances in computers we have had. Would it then make sense for boat owners with the older generation ECMs to send them in for an upgrade? Or if it ain't broke don't fix it?
Thanks Jeff

"Good explanation Jeff (for a carbeurator guy). In addition, Scott, thing change, like fuel. Additives and octane ratings are not the same as they were 10 years ago and these changes need to be compensated for to keep your engine running properly with the current fuels being offered.

There is no guarantee the new calibration will solve your rough idle problem, there may be other issues, but hopefully it will.

Good luck,
Rick"

"Never under-estimate Jeff.He comes from deep in the Dutch country,Kempton Pa., where motors of all sizes and shapes ever made, might of come under his eyes.Go see the town fair onced-now.These boys know mechanical stuff pretty well there..........Todd"
